The complex was founded in April 1456 by Francesco Sforza and designed by Filarete, who worked on the right wing, towards S. Nazaro, until 1465. Lombard craftsmen then continued the work, in particular Giuniforte Solari. The works, which continued throughout the 16th century, received new impetus from 1624 onwards. The monumental portal was designed by Francesco Maria Ricchino, who reproduced the arched mullioned windows on the Via Festa del Perdono façade. The works continued with extensions and completions until 1939, when the hospital was transferred to the Niguarda district. In August 1943, aerial bombardments destroyed large parts of Ricchino's wing. The current layout is the result of restoration work begun in 1953 by Piero Portaluppi and Liliana Grassi. Since 1958, it has been the seat of the State University.
