The theater, which stands on the site of the church of Ss.Cosima and Damian was built, in 1978, by Luigi Canonica, considering previous designs by Giuseppe Piermarini and Leopoldo Pollack. Coinciding with the coronation of Napoleon Bonaparte as King of Italy, May 26, 1805, the theater was renamed the ‘Accademia dei Filodrammatici’. In 1904 it was the subject of a significant intervention by architects Laveni and Avati, which replaced the old brick façade (started but never completed), with the libery forms style, still preserved. The factory was severely damaged by American bombing of 1943 and 1945 and was rebuilt between 1960 and 1970 by the architect Caccia Dominioni.
