Designed by Giuseppe Grandi, winner of the competition in 1881, the monument commemorating the events of March 1848 was completed in 1895. It consists of an obelisk on a Swedish granite base surrounded by five allegorical figures in bronze, reflecting the artistic climate between Impressionism and Art Nouveau. The crypt beneath the base contains the remains of the fallen, whose names are engraved on the obelisk. Analytical investigations have revealed the presence of polymeric protective coatings on the surface. The same investigations also revealed the presence of two colors: the sculptural groups and the plume were to be gilded, while the stele was to be brown-green.
