Casa di Riposo for Musicians Giuseppe Verdi, Milan

Gasparoli

It is significant, in the year of the Verdi Centennial, to be able to contribute to the maintenance and preservation of the House of Rest for Musicians, as desired by Verdi at the end of his long and glorious career. Designed by Camillo Boito in 1899, it was opened in 1902, the year after the Master’s death on 27 January 1901. Opposite the building stands the bronze monument to G. Verdi, created in 1913 by Enrico Butti. The building, constructed in the neo-Roman style already adopted by Boito in previous public buildings, is further enriched with polystylistic elements. In the postwar period, an additional floor was added to the structure. In the courtyard stands the monument to Arrigo Boito, made by Luigi Secchi. In the crypt, decorated with mosaics based on cartoons by Ludovico Pogliaghi, rest the remains of Giuseppe Verdi and Giuseppina Strepponi.
